The rest of the stories in The Last Wish make up most of the show's first season, though it also draws from the book you should read second: Sword of Destiny, the collection that was (confusingly) published first. The story A Grain of Truth from this collection will kick off the second season of the Netflix show. These include Dandelion (aka Jaskier), a poet friend of Geralt who is hearing these tales we’re experiencing, Yennifer, a sorceress with whom Geralt begins a troubled relationship, and Triss, also a sorceress, a friend of Geralt but also the third point of the Geralt, Yennifer and Triss love triangle. Sapkowski tells of Geralt's silver sword with which he kills the monsters of magic, he depicts the often-corrupt governments that reside throughout the world, and we meet an ensemble of characters. The Last Wish introduces everything you'll see in the games. While it was published second, it's the start of the series, introducing Geralt and establishing the Continent as a backdrop. Season of Storms (optional explained below). Many stories have been told in the Witcher universe, but the central arc follows Geralt as he protects Ciri, a princess whose country has been conquered. If you want sword-wielding action and grotesque monsters, you're in the right place. The books follow a man named Geralt who happens to be a Witcher: someone attuned with supernatural abilities and trained from childhood to battle beasts that threaten the public. In 2013, one more novel was published, but it isn't a continuation of the saga told by the '90s novels, instead taking place during the events of the short stories. The books were released in English starting in 2007, with Danusia Stok translating the first two and David French taking over duties from the third book. In the early '90s, the stories were published in two collections (out of order), which were followed by five novels, all published throughout the same decade. The Witcher started in the '80s as a series of short stories written by Sapkowski for a fantasy magazine. It's not the most complicated fantasy series ever, but the publishing order of the Witcher books isn't necessarily the best order to read them in. Otherwise, enjoy the show, get extra details from the books and forever sing Toss a Coin to whoever will listen. The Witcher season 2's first episode will be based on, for instance, you'll find it in The Last Wish, the Witcher book we recommend you start with. For example, Season of Storms is the last book, but the events are set around the same time as Last Wish.įor a more exhaustive guide on how to read things if you’d prefer to stick to a story timeline instead, head to this article. However, it’s good for readers to know that the publication dates of The Witcher books and the actual story chronology are different. It’s the way the original fans enjoyed them and fell in love with them, so why not go on that epic journey too? I’d argue that this is the best order to read them too, with perhaps the exception of starting with The Last Wish. Doing it the other way just makes things even messier.
